As part of our dedication to Public education and awareness, our goal is to provide up to date information on residential fatal fire statistics in the State of Michigan.  In 2018, Michigan saw an increase of 42 home fire deaths, up to 139 from 96, in 2017. We will continue to track and report these numbers for 2019. 


2019 Residential Fire Deaths YTD: 38 in 34 fires (as of April 9, 2019)

2018 Fatal Fire Facts: 

  • There was a 62% increase over total known residential fire fatalities in 2017

  • 60% of known fatal fire origins occurred in the bedroom or living room

  • In 2018, of fire fatalities were 64% male and 34% female

  • Smoking is the leading known cause of fire fatalities in the State of Michigan.
